New Girl

I switch in and out between watching TV series and reading books.  And there are days when I just binge on watching TV series especially when I am on vacation.

After exhausting a number of my favourite TV series, I finally got to watching New Girl.  Some people find this series a bit overwhelming but I love it! I find it so ridiculous that in each episode, I am sure to laugh out loud.

Last night, I watched episode 18 of season 1 and I was laughing long and hard that I thought I was going to wake up my sleeping daughter. And I'm sure I'm getting a lot of funny stares from the passengers in the bus and earlier today during lunch because I would just suddenly laugh out loud.

I still have a long way to go before I finish it since this series is already at season 4.  I just hope it continues to be as ridiculous as it is now so that I have more reasons to laugh.  I need it these days.  :)

Flashpoint

I discovered this TV series the other day and although I had no idea if it was good, I went ahead and tried it. I figured that since it's a story that talks about snipers, what's not to like? And from its first episode, I was hooked. The characters are not flashy but charming. So you get to connect with each one of them.

One of the things I like about the series is the music they play at the end of each episode. Great music.

We just finished watching part 1 of Season 2 and so far, it's still maintaining its charisma.

I'm glad I took a chance and discovered a great show. And great music as well.

Stargate Atlantis

The first few episodes of this TV series was not as good as you'd expect. Lines were corny and had us wanting to regularly vomit. We keep on shouting at the non-existent script writers while watching corny parts of the episode. We figured the writer must be someone so naive or someone young. But we persevered.

I think Stargate Atlantis is a series that will grow on you. The characters definitely got better and no matter how arrogant some of them were portrayed, somehow you'd end up liking them all.

So we got hooked. We were sorely disappointed that the season 3 was not available at the rental store. I thought no one else watches it. He he.

Anyhow, I'm just waiting and biding my time until I get my hands on the latest season. I really hope I won't have to wait too long.

Brothers & Sisters

Women are emotional creatures and the TV series Brothers & Sisters definitely exploits that. I guess you can consider this TV series a chick flick. But it's not a shallow one that has a pre-determined formula. It does have the right ingredients: love, betrayal, anger, laughter and tears but it's got something more.

It uncovers the different aspects of a family: the good, the bad and the ugly. The family in focus are the Walkers comprised of 2 sisters (Sarah and Kitty), 3 brothers (Kevin, Tommy and Justin) and The mother (Nora).

I guess when you've got a good relationship with anyone in your family, this TV series is sure to be a tear jerker. I sure cried a lot!

But it's not just the tears that gets to you. It's the laughter and the warmth that the family shares with each other. How they can fight so fiercely with each other one moment and then suddenly shows a solidarity so common for close families.

It is definitely a feel-good series and hopefully it will last a few more seasons. If only because of the beautiful smile from Dave Annable....

Las Vegas

I watched this TV series in reverse chronological order. From Season four, then three then two. Ha ha.

It was a TV series that I never want to rent out because I figured it's just one of those where the focus is on the beautiful girls of the casts and not much else. But boy, was I wrong by a mile.

The characters are really lovable, each and every one of them. Well, okay, I am not much of a fan of Mary who was depicted as the sweetest person in the planet. I sometimes wanna vomit whenever she practices her tweety tums character.

Okay, I digress. The TV series revolves around the Montecito, a fake Las Vegas casino and the different people who manages and runs the casino. Most of the time, an episode would be filled with funny scenes and you can't help but guffaw because of it.

My favorite character is Delinda Deline. The genius daughter who can sometimes be crazy or clueless. She is one funny character and I love her.

It is sad to learn though that Season 5 is the last of this great TV series. James Caan, who plays Ed Deline, the operations manager in the casino, left Season 5 to pursue other aspects of his acting career. I am not sure if the series got axed because of his leaving as I have yet to watch the next season. But I'm sure it's part of it. He is perfect as Ed Deline.

Anyhow, do watch this TV series and you find out for yourself why I love the show. You just might end up being a fan.

Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip

It was a show behind a show. The series revolve around the lives of the cast and crew of a sketch comedy show. The show includes familiar names like Matthew Perry, Amanda Peet and Bradley Whitford. I wasn't familiar with the TV series but i figured it must be worthwhile watching. Well, okay. There was nothing else available as I've already watched everything else. He he.

It has comedy, romance and drama rolled into one. There were some dead spots within an episode but then something brilliant or funny or romantic will come up and you forget about it. Except for a few snippets, there isn't much shown about the actual show that is produced. In a way, it seems like you're cheated.

Currently, there is speculation that the series is not coming back for a 2nd season. With other contenders like CSI and Heroes, it is definitely going to give. Although it has its moments, it doesn't have the sustaining power of these two TV series and it'll be difficult to catch up.

Mind Your Language

I saw an episode of this TV series when I was in London. I liked it a lot and found it hilarious. I happen to saw a copy of the complete series at Gramaphone, available for rent, and decided to take it home to see if it is still as funny as it was before.

My housemates and me can’t stop laughing. This series is so wickedly funny that you'll burst out laughing several times in a minute.

The story revolves around a class of foreign students who were there to learn English. There were students from Pakistan, France, China, India, Germany, Greece, Italy, Spain and Japan. Their English teacher, Mr. Brown, was newly hired by the school as the last language teacher jumped out from the window in frustration.

It is a very old TV series and in the current day where everyone tries to be politically correct, it might not be as accepted as other TV series might be. Some might find it crude as it exploits each country's generalities. Thus, as the politically correct might argue, will cause other people to generalize each nationality based on what they see in the TV series.

But I think it's perfect and should be taken lightly. There really is some part where the sensitive might get offended but at the time when the TV series was being aired, it was a big hit.

One of the students would usually say "Squeeze me" instead of "Excuse me" and has a habit of saying "Jolly good" as I often heard the English do.

Watch it if you are not too sensitive and not inclined to be politically correct. Who knows? You just might like it.

Mind your language

The Unit

Warning: Spoilers ahead

This is a TV Series that I didn't think is this good, but I was proven wrong. Let's just say that we started watching it in the early evening and we managed to get to CD 3 by early morning. There's only 4 CDs for this series so by tonight, we should be able to finish watching the whole season 1.

It's almost like 24. It may not be as past-faced but it is as exciting. It is the story of the men who works in a special force handling situations that's usually dangerous and involves a lot of casualties. It requires cunning, self-reliance and good teamwork. Each member of the Unit is good at what they do. It is a series that has a good formula: comedy, family, thrill and it gives a person a sense of pride. I am not sure if what they are depicting in this series is true. All I can say is if it is, then these men are great at what they do.

It's so nice to watch them go from one place to another and kick butts along the way. These are soldiers of a different breed. The best one. But they are not allowed to discuss or publicize their work for security reasons. The story revolves around the lives of their family as well and how their constant absence affect each woman, how each handle the time they have on their own.

I consider this as now one of my favorite TV series. Watch it and get to know why.

The Doctor Is In The House

As a fan of Grey’s Anatomy, I never bothered to watch the TV series House because I thought it was not interesting enough. I summarily disregarded it even though I’ve never watched a single episode.

After all of my TV series have been exhausted, I was left with three seasons of House to watch and I figured “might as well”. And boy, did I love it!

Dr. Gregory House is the head of the Department of Diagnostics Medicine. He’s got an acidic tongue that does not necessarily endear him to anyone. He abhors meeting his patients and will only meet with them when it is extremely necessary. Or when the patient is a beautiful model.

House solves medical problems that others cannot. He thinks of the most unconnected reason for a medical problem and still manages to be right in the end.

He has three other doctors working for him: Foreman, Cameron and Chase. All brilliant doctors whose collective thoughts help to identify solutions to House’s puzzle cases.

The other two main characters, Wilson and Cuddy, are House’s best friend and boss, respectively.

For a TV series, it is as addictive as it can be. I love all of the characters, each with their own quirky personality.

Veronica Mars - Defy The Norm

So there is a new TV series that I am spending a lot of time on: Veronica Mars. Didn't really take much note of it when I first saw it but it kinda grow on you. The story revolves around Veronica Mars, high school student, one of the not-haves. The high school is a place where the haves and the not haves go together. Veronica used to be part of the "in" crowd but a tragedy involving her best friend turned her from the sweet little girl to the sarcastic "I'm afraid of no one" assistant PI for her father.

I love their signature song "We Used To Be Friends" from The Dandy Warhols. Hear it here....

Ugly Betty

Warning: Spoilers ahead.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. An adage that does not really apply in this new show. America is Ugly Betty, an ordinary girl from Queens that plunged into the crazy, hectic, beauty-conscious world of high fashion. She's no fashionista, that's for sure. But she is intelligent and manages to make her presence noticed by everyone. Well, with that bright red poncho and the colorful array of clothes she wears everyday, I think there is no choice but to notice her.

I've heard of the show on TV, of how it was nominated for an award or something. But I tend to be skeptic about shows that are nominated for awards. I fear I am sometimes disappointed. So I watched the pilot episode without any expectations. I figured if I don't like it I could always stop watching.

But I was hooked and I can't seem to stop watching. I love this show! The characters are so hilarious that you can't help but love all of them. Well, maybe except for Walter. =)

Princess Hours

I’ve only watched two Korean TV series: Winter Sonata and Princess Hours. I really liked Winter Sonata but I didn’t finish that series because I always seem to be shedding tears left and right and the whole theme seems to be revolving around sadness. It’s a good series but I think it’s just too sad.

Princess Hours, in contrast, is such a fun series that I enjoyed watching it all the way to the mildly cheesy ending. I watched it with the same fervor that I give to my favorite TV series (e.g. 24, One Tree Hill, Prison Break, etc.). I watched it continuously at a time when I should be working weekends. Suffice to say that I was able to finish the TV series in one weekend. That’s how addicted I was. My sister Mary watched it with me and we were usually laughing with the antics of the characters.

I love the Crown Princess and Crown Prince. Yoon Eun Hye plays the Crown Princess and is so pretty and so funny. She’s just plain adorable. Joo Ji Hoon plays the Crown Prince. Saw somewhere that this is his acting debut. Not bad. Not bad at all. He’s got good angles when you’d think he’s quite handsome but then in most moments he looks plain. I think though that he played the character well.

I loved the whole series and really had a great time watching it. I am so looking forward to the sequel.

If you happen to watch it, you’ll probably enjoy the bears as well. I thought it was a nifty idea. =)
