We were buying groceries at a nearby minimart. A lady walking behind us commented on the fact that we bought two 5-kilo rice bags.
"On sale huh?"
"No. We just bought two items."
"The other store", referring to a small grocery store just across the street, "is more expensive."
"Really?"
"Yeah. Are you Philippine?" Yes, she did botch the word.
"Yes. I am from the Philippines."
"Don't speak English also?"
"Uhm. I do speak English."
And then she walked away ending the conversation at that. I had to smile and scoff at the audacity of the woman to suggest that I don't speak a language that she obviously does not master.
Oh well.
