Afford Cigarette Dim

The words for this week are:

Afford
Cigarette
Dim

The red tip of the cigarette is the only indication of his presence. In the dim light of the streetlight, his whole face is covered by the shadows and he thus feels safe in anonymity.

He dressed for the occasion, ensuring only dark colored clothes in his ensemble. He needs to blend in with the shadows and be part of the darkness. He needs to observe without being seen.

He waits impatiently, shifting regularly from one foot to the other. After almost an eternity, he sees her across the street. She’s wearing green today. It’s her favorite color as it brings out the color in her eyes.

As she walks nearer, a smile broke out on her face. He smiled in return. She must have seen him. Wait. She is smiling and waving her hands now but her eyes are focused on someone on his right. There! The man with the leather jacket.

She walks faster, a spring of happiness on her steps. She is definitely happy to see the man. They shared hug a few steps away from him but she is unaware of his presence, not even glancing once on his way.

A burst of anger swells into his heart and he started to see red. He suddenly sees the dagger in his hand, seeming to appear from nowhere. And when he realizes this, he knew what he had to do.

Her back was turned on him so she never saw him coming. She felt a pain on her left side and wondered if she was stinged by a bee. Her husband suddenly stopped when he felt her crumple to the floor. He saw the man with the dagger, with a look of anger and betrayal on his face. He and his wife were having trouble and he suspected she has a lover. But this morning she called him and asked for reconciliation. And tonight was supposed to be the start of their renewed relationship. Now, he is lost as he feels the wet blood on his hands.

“You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.”

The police’s words were lost and never understood as he stares at the woman he loves. She is losing a lot of blood but in her darkest hours, it is to her husband that she clings to and sought solace.

He wants to feel glad that he has avenged himself but a sudden realization made him stop. He has killed the woman he loves.

“You have the right to speak to an attorney, and to have an attorney present during any questioning. If you cannot afford a lawyer, one will be provided for you at government expense.”

The husband looks at the man who killed his wife as the police took him away. A sudden grief filled him as he realized, he has forever lost the woman he loves.

Almost written in the rhythm of a play by play flashback. Very well written.

Revenge to compensate for the hurt ego. The consequences are unavoidable.

I felt that you've developed the suspense well.

Wow. I was hoping she would live. I agree with the others. Interesting twist on the angry husband/cheating wife story.

Interesting story. I was saddened by the ending. But, at least the lover was apprehended by the police. Nice job with the words this week. Keep up the good work.
